Ground Zero Search and Rescue Dogs Scanned
Iams Pet Imaging is doing its part to help the dogs and rescue workers
involved in the search and rescue effort following the 9/11 attacks.

Staff from the Redwood City Iams Pet Imaging Center with four handlers and their search and rescue dogs. All four dogs are doing fine following their successful scans completed at the Center on December 5, 2006 as the final stage in a five year study.

TV Coverage Of Search and Rescue Dog Scanning

The scanning of the 9/11 Search and Rescue dogs was covered by all the local TV networks, plus local radio stations and newspapers. Other news agencies throughout the country also covered the event. Many of the TV news stations posted video clips on their websites.

Many of the first responders involved in the 9/11 search and rescue mission have become ill. Some have breathing problems associated with the dust at Ground Zero. For the past five years the Iams Pet Imaging Centers in California, Virginia, and North Carolina have been studying the effects to the search and rescue dogs from 9/11.

Today four dogs and their handlers have come to the Redwood City Iams Pet Imaging Center for their annual MRI to check their health status.

Rescue-Dogs handlers share strong bond with their canines
Mizu is a search and rescue dog who, with her handler Bill Kidd, has been to Ground Zero and Iraq on search and rescue missions. During these missions both Mizo and Kidd have been subjected to dust and smoke with the potential to cause harm.

The Iams Pet Imaging Centers have, for the last five years, been helping Mizo and Kidd by providing MRI scans to check on Mizu, and other search and rescue dogs’ health. The scans lets them know the condition of the dogs and is also indicative of possible problems their human counterparts may contract.

Compelled by their devotion to their dogs, these handlers have come from all over the country today to have their dogs scanned. The MRI facility in Redwood City, CA is one of the very few dedicated veterinary MRI facilities in the country. The clinic scans mostly pet dogs and cats, but sometimes animals with an even more important role like search and rescue dogs, law enforcement K9s, and seeing eye dogs.

To date 70% of Ground Zero worker have tested positive for respiratory problems. However, even though the estimated 300 dogs had to work without respiratory protection, none have had problems that are statically different from a control group of dogs.
